Using AI Tools to Enhance Writing Skills in EFL Classrooms

For this task, our group designed an AI-integrated teaching material focused on improving writing skills for high school English prep students. The activity centers on guiding students to write, revise, and enhance their writing with the help of ChatGPT.

The Process

1. Pre-task: We introduced the topic by discussing the importance of clear and structured writing. Students brainstormed ideas for a short paragraph based on a prompt, such as "Describe your dream vacation." Afterward, we provided guidelines on how to organize their paragraphs effectively.

2. Target Task: Students wrote their paragraphs and submitted them to ChatGPT using a predefined prompt for feedback. For example, “Can you provide feedback on this paragraph? Focus on grammar, vocabulary, and clarity.” They documented the feedback on a worksheet and revised their writing accordingly. This step helped students identify areas for improvement and refine their skills.

3. Post-task: To wrap up, students reflected on their experience with AI by answering questions such as, “How did the feedback improve your writing?” They shared their revised paragraphs with peers for additional insights, encouraging collaborative learning.

Reflection

The integration of AI made the activity engaging and interactive. ChatGPT provided detailed, actionable feedback, which enhanced the students’ confidence in their writing. While we faced minor challenges in training students to use the tool effectively, clear instructions and examples helped overcome these issues. Overall, this task highlighted the potential of AI tools in fostering autonomous learning.

My friends Emir, Emirhan, Emir Batu, and I collaborated as a group to complete this assignment. For this task, we developed a lesson plan that incorporated AI technology. We decided to focus on the grammar topic of "conjunctions." As part of the activity, students were asked to write a short text about their favorite city, ensuring they used conjunctions appropriately. After completing their texts, students used an AI tool to analyze their work. The AI provided detailed feedback, highlighting errors and offering suggestions for improvement. Students then revised their texts based on this feedback, allowing them to refine their grammar and writing skills effectively.
