AI Tools in Language Learning and Teaching

In my final assignment of the semester, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Çaka Bey, a significant figure in Turkish naval history, using Magic School's Character Chatbot. This assignment allowed me to see how an AI-powered, authentic assignment could yield different results than a traditional, research-based historical figure research assignment. This aspect of AI enlightened me, as a prospective teacher, about the intersection of technology and education.

Despite having limited data on the historical figure, the AI tool was incredibly helpful in the visualization process. Instead of passively reading articles, the need to formulate in-depth questions about Çaka Bey improved my knowledge of history and academic research. The key was to refine the questions to elicit specific and argumentative responses.

Looking back at my future teaching practice, I realize the powerful potential of integrating a similar assignment into my coursework. The potential benefits of giving students speaking and writing assignments like this will be invaluable in the future.

Thanks to AI, students have the chance to practice without fear of judgment. Although AI lacks human empathy and elements of genuine communication, it is improving in this area and offering opportunities for learning. Ultimately, this assignment showed me that AI is a powerful assistant for both students and educators, but it can never replace human connection.
